Dear WBW celebrants,
We mark the 25th World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) this year by celebrating all of you, our growing family of mothers and fathers, advocates, experts, decision-makers and opinion shapers, all of you who believe in making a difference!
Last year, we began a campaign to align the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding with broader efforts to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WABA clustered the SDGs into 4 Thematic Areas that relate to each other and to breastfeeding. Organising complex information on the SDGs for WBW2016 was an essential first step. We take heart from the success of WBW2016 and the engagement that followed.
The #WBW2017 theme Sustaining Breastfeeding Together is about finding each other and working together for the common good! Let us plan to campaign for a generation. We need to recognise the part we can play and the difference we can make, then find others who share in our desire to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
To achieve sustainable development, we need to agree to work together on shared priorities, plan future action, commit to the work, and measure the impact of our collective efforts. This approach will inform, guide and frame future WBWs. WABA will work to link individuals and organisations through our Working Together online platform. We know that it is not technology that is at the centre of our passion and commitment, it is the quality of empathy. We hope that the materials and resources that we produce and share will help in making the 25th World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) a little more special.

The countdown has started. We only have until 2030 to take ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals in a way that is meaningful to us. There is much to learn and much to share. Together, we can transform WBW from a celebration for one week in a year, into a showcase of our year long efforts. Let us celebrate each other, make our family grow and work together to make a difference.
