40 years ago, the World Health Assembly adopted the International Code of the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, establishing a legal framework that has undoubtedly saved millions of infants’ and mothers’ lives. To mark this important anniversary, Alive & Thrive is launching a variety of articles, resources, and multimedia on the Code, led by a four-part series of articles by David Clark, who for 25 years supported countries to implement the Code as UNICEF’s legal specialist on the Code.

This frequently asked questions (FAQ) document aims to provide health workers with information on their specific roles and responsibilities in protecting breastfeeding practices against the inappropriate promotion of breastmilk substitutes by manufacturers and distributors.

World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide.

Annually, WABA coordinates and organises the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) between Aug 1-7. Since 2016, we have aligned our WBW campaign to United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We call this the WBW-SDGs Campaign.

World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide based on the Innocenti Declarations, the Ten Links for Nurturing the Future and the WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding. WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF and an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC). WABA coordinates the annual World Breastfeeding Week campaign.
